NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A ceremony was held Saturday at the MacArthur Memorial Rotunda to mark Flag Day.
The ceremony, which was free and open to the public, was sponsored by the Great Bridge Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Rear Admiral Byron E. Tobin was the guest speaker at the ceremony.
A law signed by President Harry Truman in 1949 established June 14th as Flag Day.
Flag Day dates back to 1777, when the Continental Congress wanted to establish an official flag for the new country. They passed the first Flag Act on June 14th.
This is the 47th year the chapter held the ceremony in the rotunda.
It also happens to be the 200th anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” our national anthem written by Francis Scott Key.
