VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Commonwealth’s top prosecutor talked same-sex marriage Saturday in Virginia Beach.
Attorney General Mark Herring spoke at the Virginia State Bar annual meeting, discussing the legal issues surrounding marriage equality and his role as Attorney General.
The U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals is reviewing Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriages. Herring refused to defend the 2006 law that bans same-sex marriage.
“I was determined to make sure that our Commonwealth, meaning the people of Virginia, were on the right side of the law and on the right side of history,” he said.
The judges are expected to rule some time this summer on the whether or not the ban on same-sex marriage is constitutional.
