KITTY HAWK, N.C. (WAVY) – Currituck County Sheriff’s Deputies recovered the body of a missing 14-year-old kayaker Sunday morning.
According to Sheriff Johnson, the body of Justin Greene was recovered Sunday on the shore near where his kayak was found Friday.
Friday evening, Currituck County dispatchers reported to the Coast Guard the teen had borrowed a friend’s kayak at 10 a.m. The kayak was found about an hour later near the Wright Memorial Bridge with a cell phone and fishing gear.
The Coast Guard dispatched a 25-foot Response Boat and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to help on Friday. The Coast Guard searched for approximately 10 hours covering approximately 30 square nautical miles for the missing kayaker before suspending their search operations Saturday afternoon.
The search then became a recovery operation.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, Lower Currituck Fire Department and North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission resumed the search Sunday morning and Greene’s body was recovered around 8:22 a.m.
According to the Coast Guard, Justin Greene was reportedly not wearing a life jacket.
