Police ID armed man locked in check cashing business

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia Beach Police have identified an armed suspect who they say was locked inside a business by an employee Friday morning.

MPO Tonya Borman with the Virginia Beach Police Department said around 8:33 a.m., an employee reported the suspect entered the ACE Cash Express located at 1064 Lynnhaven Pkwy. with a weapon. Somehow the employee was able to lock the suspect inside the business and contact 9-1-1.

Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Clarence Cortez Brown.

Officers responded and set up a perimeter around the shopping center and used a bullhorn to coax him out. Brown was taken into custody, and was charged with attempted robbery, abduction and two counts of use of a firearm. He is being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.

No one was hurt.

Lynnhaven Parkway was closed in both directions in the 1000 block as officers tried to get the suspect out. Borman said eastbound traffic was rerouted to Magic Hollow Boulevard and westbound traffic was rerouted to Fern Ridge Road.

Traffic was flowing again freely by 9:50 a.m.
