Officers speak out after James River boat rescue

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The three Newport News police officers who helped save lives in a deadly boating accident spoke with WAVY News Thursday.

The boat capsized Sunday in the James River, near the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.

Five people were on board. Two of them, cousins Philip and William Smallwood, died.

Officers ran to the end of the pier, took off their heavy equipment and jumped in the water to help.

The responding officers said this incident proves there is no such thing as “routine” patrol. Some of them had military training involving water safety.
