‘Spider-man’ on pothole patrol in Va. Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Some of you driving in Virginia Beach may have noticed a plea from a masked man. A man who usually spins a web to catch crooks is trying untangle a different web to fix roads in Virginia Beach.

“Our city is crumbling!” shouts a man on the side of Northampton Boulevard, clad from head to toe in blue and red nylon.

‘Spider-man’ is calling out Virginia Beach and its roads too frequently traveled. Namely, parts of Independence, Northampton and Virginia Beach boulevards and Shore Drive.

“I’ve contacted the pothole line, the pothole supervisor, the assistant manager. We’ve been back and forth with emails telling me how they’re working on it. And here we are basically in the middle of the year, and nothing’s been done.”

Drew Lankford with Virginia Beach Public Works begs to differ. He  sent us a statement saying their records show ‘Spider-man,’ who is really Scott Love, reported a pothole to them Tuesday afternoon and it was fixed by Wednesday morning.

“We have a year-round, full-time pothole program with several crews that has been very successful. In just the first six months of this year we have filled over 4,000 potholes, as compared to over 3,500 potholes over the entire 12-month period last year,” said Lankford through an email to 10 On Your Side.

If you see a pothole in Virginia Beach, call 757-385-1470 to report it.

Full statement from Virginia Beach Public Works:

We appreciate Spider Man’s assistance in getting our phone number out to the public for reporting potholes.  The majority of the potholes we fix are the result of the citizens calling in and letting us know where they are.  We have a year-round, full-time pothole program with several crews that has been very successful.   In just the first six months of this year we have filled over 4,000 potholes, as compared to over 3500 potholes over the entire 12-month period last year.

Like Spider man, we encourage people to call us whenever they discover a pothole and our policy is to repair them within 48 hours.  We have also installed a special phone in the Bat Cave just for Spider Man to report potholes so he will no longer have to suffer in the heat next to oncoming traffic.

To paraphrase Spider Man:  “With great power comes great responsibility.” This is (our) gift, (our) curse. Who are we?   We are  . . . Virginia Beach Public Works!”
