CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The mother of a 5-month-old baby told police she forgot the child in the back of her vehicle when she went into a business Tuesday.

Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department told the infant was left in the unlocked vehicle in the 3100 block of Western Branch Boulevard during the afternoon hours. The vehicle was not running.

Witnesses told 10 On Your Side they heard the baby screaming at the top of his lungs and took him out of the car.

“When they took him out of the car he was completely saturated cause he had sweat so much his diaper was completely soaked, his body was hot to the touch,” said Alicia White.

White, who works at a dental office in the complex, helped rescue the baby.

“The 911 dispatchers said to keep the baby covered with something cold and wet, so we took paper towels and we got his temperature down, stripped him out of his clothes to make sure that he was, he was okay.”

Police told the baby was taken to Sentara Belle Harbour Hospital and was not injured.

The child’s mother, 24-year-old  Crystal Taylor, was charged with neglect. The infant was released to his father, who does not reside with the mother.
