Police: Woman shot on I-64 was unintended target

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – The passenger in a vehicle traveling on Interstate 64 in Hampton was struck by a stray bullet early Sunday morning. It’s the second such incident this week.

Virginia State Police confirm 30-year-old Gretchen Rock of Manassas was hit in the head by a bullet near the Big Bethel Road overpass. She was in a car traveling eastbound on I-64, but investigators do not know from which direction the bullet came.

State Police do not believe she was the target. No arrests have been made.

Ms. Rock was taken to Riverside Hospital where she is listed in good condition.

The next day another woman was injured in a shooting on Interstate 64. She was driving near the Settlers Landing Road exit when she was shot. The VSP investigation indicates two men in a gold Toyota Camry were shooting at another vehicle and the woman was caught in the crossfire. She received non-life threatening injuries.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with State Police told WAVY.com investigators do not believe the two cases are connected.
