HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police confirm a shooting in the Phoebus area of Hampton Monday afternoon. At least one person has been hit and the suspects are still at large.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the shooting happened around 3:20 p.m. on Interstate 64 East near the Settlers Landing Road and Mallory Street exits. The Emergency Communications Center got a 911 call about a female driver with a gunshot wound in need of medical help.
She was transported to Riverside Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, Anaya said.
An initial investigation indicates two men in a gold Toyota Camry were shooting at another vehicle and continued traveling east on I-64.
The suspects continued on I-64 and exited onto Mallory Street and continued to fire, hitting the female victim. Anaya said that victim stopped and called 911.
State police were on scene until the early evening. Some drivers were stuck on Mallory Street and not able to move for at least two hours. Many didn’t know why police were searching the exit ramp to Mallory Street. They turned to their smart phones to look up what was going on.
“It’s kinda scary,” said Otis Johnson, a passenger in a vehicle that hadn’t moved. “After a long day of work, we could get caught up in the crossfire.”
Anaya said troopers are on the lookout for the suspects’ gold Camry.
