Light rail extension considered for Chesapeake

Chris Horne on light rail expansion in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — There’s more talk about expanding the light rail from Norfolk, but this time the destination is Chesapeake.

There has been more than enough talk about extending the Tide to Virginia Beach. And Chesapeake City officials talked about it in 2003, but didn’t think it would work. Now the conversation is being revisited.

Later this month City Council is expected to take up a resolution that would ask Hampton Roads Trasit to look for nearly $2 million for a study on whether a line from Norfolk to the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake is feasible.

The line could follow the existing Norfolk Southern line that runs through the South Norfolk section of the city.

This is all just talk, so nothing will happen anytime soon. Also keep in mind that Virginia Beach has been talking about a light rail extension for a while, and environmental studies for those proposals won’t be completed until early 2016.

But you can count on 10 On Your Side to keep you informed on the latest developments.
