VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A black bear has been “taken into custody” after it was spotted Friday afternoon in the Chick’s Beach area of Virginia Beach.

Tonya Borman with the Virginia Beach Police Department said someone called police around 2:45 p.m. about a bear on the beach in the 3300 block of Ocean Shore Avenue. Neighbors and Virginia Beach Police Marine Patrol kept track of the bear from the water, and directed officers to its location.

Police and Animal Control had the bear contained to a tree on Dolphin Road. Borman said the bear was “taken into custody” by 5:45 p.m., and was sleeping in an Animal Control vehicle. The bear will be taken in for a 24 hour evaluation by the State Biologist, and then relocated.

A picture sent in via ReportIt@WAVY.com showed the bear in the parking lot of the Cape Henry Towers, near the Lesner Bridge.
