YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) — A father was charged with child neglect after his children asked a neighbor in the Coventry subdivision if they could spend the night.

According to Deputy Mike Russell with the York County Sheriff’s Office, an 8-year-old and 4-year-old left their father’s residence on Cheswick Circle and knocked on the door of a neighbor. The children said they’d been home alone for several hours and asked if they could spend the night.

When the neighbor wasn’t able to reach the children’s father, the sheriff’s office was called. Deputies and child services responded. The children were turned over to the custody of their mother, who does not live at the residence with the father.

When the father, 33-year-old Carlos R. Garcia, returned home several hours later, Russell said he appeared to be intoxicated. He was arrested by deputies and charged with two counts of child neglect and appearing intoxicated in public.

Russell said Garcia allegedly left the children home alone for about 12 hours. He was taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, where he was held without bond.
