Wounded warriors arrive in Hampton Roads

Wounded Warrior athletes arrive in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Wounded warriors have descended upon Hampton Roads.

10 On Your Side was there as the first group flew into Norfolk International Airport late Friday afternoon. The men and women are here to compete in the Navy trials to see who will go to the Wounded Warrior games.

Over the next few days, these special athletes will compete in archery, track and field events, swimming, wheelchair basketball, pistol and rifle shooting, sitting volleyball, and cycling. It’s more than competition. It gives these heroes a chance to heal.

“They help with me with some of the mental issues that I go through — anxiety, sleeping problems and stuff like that. Getting together with a bunch of guys that have been through the same process, the same thing you’ve been through, war and all that. It’s always good it’s stress relieving and all that,” said an athlete.

Each Wounded Warrior athlete is being sponsored by an individual Navy or Coast Guard unit from the Hampton Roads area.

Saturday is an R&R day for the athletes, who have traveled from across the nation for the trials. Practice begins Sunday and the trials will run Wednesday through Saturday.

The 2014 Wounded Warrior Games will take place from September 28 to October 4.
