All eight units of the building had been evacuated before rescue crews arrived. No one was injured, according to Diana Klink with the city of Suffolk.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze around 8:45 p.m.

Klink said the fire started in the apartment kitchen, but the cause is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Damage because of the fire has displaced three families — a total of 11 people — from three units in the building. All are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The residents of the remaining 5 apartments in the building were allowed to return to their residences.
