NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police have charged the mother of a 9-year-old after an employee at a business complained to police about the boy being alone.

Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com an officer was flagged down around 5 p.m. Thursday in the 9900 block of Warwick Boulevard by an employee about the boy at the business. The business was never named by police.

An officer was dispatched to the child’s home. His mother was there.

“The investigation revealed the child had been at the business for almost an hour on that day and there was not an adult with him,” McPherson said. “In addition, this was not the first time this child came to the business.”

McPherson said the boy had gone to the business before or after school several times and was always hungry or in need of a shower.

The boy’s mother, Kristine Lee Hudson, 32, of Newport News was charged with child neglect.
