DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – A 39-year-old North Carolina man is accused of swallowing evidence and trying to flee during a traffic stop last week in Dare County.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office said Aaron John Stonesifer of Harbinger has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement, alter/steal/destroy criminal evidence, possession with the intent to manufacture/sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance and sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance in connection to the incident.

According to deputies, they were investigating a suspect reportedly selling prescription medication May 22. When they conducted a traffic stop on a suspect, identified as Stonesifer, he was trying to destroy the evidence by swallowing the illegal prescription medication, deputies said.

“The suspect then locked himself in his vehicle, and officers were forced to break a window to obtain access. The suspect was then secured,” a release said.

Stonesifer was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital with minor injuries. An officer also suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Stonesifer was taken to the Dare County Detention Center upon his release from the hospital under a $20,000 bond.
