VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Bayside High School remembered one of their own on the soccer field Tuesday night.
Nick Murrell died suddenly over the weekend after a game. His parents don’t remember him having any problems, but Saturday night, he told his mother he had a headache. She tried to take care of him, but the family said he died before help arrived.
Nick’s teammates spray-painted his jersey number on the field and wore his shirts for practice. They also wore wristbands in his honor and started the game off with one less player.
10 On Your Side talked with Nick’s mother at the game.
“A lot of them went to middle school with him and played soccer, and you know they’re here, and he loved playing with all of them, whether they were freshmen or sophomore or all the seniors,” she said. “He really respected them, he respected him, treated him like a little brother, so it was just a nice way to memorialize him.”
Nick’s mother was given a soccer ball signed by the team.
Doctors still don’t know what caused his death.
