Man robs Newport News credit union

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police are investigating a credit union robbery Tuesday morning.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department said the robbery occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Main Street at the Virginia Educators Credit Union.

The suspect passed a note demanding money and implied he had a weapon. Police said he was described as a black male wearing a red and white striped shirt and jeans, however, surveillance images show the suspect in a red and white baseball hat and a blue vest with white t-shirt underneath.

He was said to have scruffy facial hair.

Michelle Price with Newport News Public Schools told WAVY.com nearby Sedgefield Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
