Man accused of swimming away from crash

NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) – Police in the Outer Banks have caught a man they say crashed his vehicle into the Roanoke Sound and swam away Monday night.

According to the Nags Head Police Department, an observant citizen called in a tip that led to the arrest of 32-year-old Michael Scott Geier of Durham, N.C. He was found around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in a vacant house on Lakeside Drive in Nags Head.

Geier is accused of hitting gas pumps at a gas station around 11 p.m. Monday near the 7600 block of South Virginia Dare Trail, driving his vehicle into the Roanoke Sound, and then swimming away from the scene.

Police say he has been transported to the Dare County Detention Center, and charges are pending.
