ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — Coast Guard watchstanders in North Carolina medevaced a 64-year-old man from a cruise ship off the coast of Elizabeth City Tuesday morning.
Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, crew aboard the Carnival Splendor contacted the Coast Guard about a man experiencing chest pains and in need of medical help. The ship was about 450 miles southeast of Elizabeth City, so Fifth District watchstanders requested the Splendor alter course toward North Carolina.
Tuesday morning, when the ship was close enough for a Coast Guard helicopter to respond, watchstanders were dispatched from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to assist. An MH-60 Jawhawk helicopter arrived on scene around 6:30 a.m., hoisted the man aboard and transported him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C.
The Coast Guard reports the man is in stable condition.
