EDENTON, N.C. (WAVY) – Edenton Police are investigating the shooting of a 16-year-old girl Sunday night.
According to the Edenton Police Department, the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Officers responded to the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Twiddy avenues and found Iyanna Roulac suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Neighbor Chasity Daye said she heard fighting on her porch.
“A group of boys, they were just fighting over here and over there, then shooting broke out and the girl, Iyanna, she had nothing to do with it. She was just out here and she got hit in her stomach. It was just nerve-wracking for everyone,” Daye said.
The victim’s grandmother, Alice Roulac, said Iyanna was doing better Monday. She said doctors might not be able to remove the bullet because of the risk involved. She did not know why anyone would shoot Iyanna.
“Iyanna didn’t have anything to do with it. She just was an innocent bystander. She didn’t have anything to do with it,” she said.
She said she wants the person who fired the gun to do the right thing.
“Everybody should face up to what they do. If they did something, face up to it. If it was a mistake, tell them it was a mistake,” she said. Iyanna was expected to be in the hospital for several days, Roulac said.
Investigators are seeking assistance and information from anyone that was a part of the large crowd gathered at the scene or from anyone with information about this crime.
Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Sergeant Laura Wilkins of the Edenton Police Department at 252-482-9884 or 252-482-5144. Your information will be kept confidential.
