JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – One person was taken to the hospital after a hang glider with an engine went down Saturday night in the James River.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said the Revo, a two-seat light sports aircraft, crashed around 8:30 p.m. According to Bob Ryalls with the James City County Fire Department, two people were on the hang glider when it crashed into six feet of water about 25 to 30 feet from shore. The crash happened in the area of Mott Lane and Manion Drive.
According to Anaya, the pilot slowed below minimum safe speed, causing the aircraft to stall and crash.
Ryalls said both people on the hang glider were standing in an upright position when crews arrived. The passenger was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. The pilot refused treatment.
Anaya said the aircraft was recovered from the river by the James City County Fire and Rescue dive team, and towed to the pilot’s home.
