Second suspect charged in NN homicide

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A second suspect has been arrested in the investigation of a home invasion early Saturday morning that ended in a homicide.

Joe Lewis Thomas, 29, of Carrollton was taken into custody around 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department.NN Jefferson Ave homicide

Thomas is charged with murder, malicious wounding, shooting in an occupied dwelling, robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, four counts of abduction and seven counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was also served an outstanding warrant for a probation violation.

Thurston said Thomas is a suspect in the homicide of a 32-year-old Newport News woman, whose name has not been released by police.

She and another woman were in a home in the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue around 4 a.m. Saturday with four children and two men when someone knocked on the door and three men forced their way inside. During the altercation that followed, one of the suspects shot the 32-year-old woman in the head and the other woman in the arm.

Thomas is being held in the Newport News City Jail.
