CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY)- The boys soccer team at Grassfield high school is rolling into the post season as the team to beat in Hampton Roads. The Grizzlies are undefeated at 14 and 0 and have outscored their opponents 56 to 2. The only goals scored against the Grizzlies came in 3-1 wins over both Hickory and Cox. “It blows my mind honestly. With all the leadership in the back, we are not just shutting out teams we rarely give up shots.” says head coach Zach Kalder.
Kalder is a first year head coach and even he knows how lucky he is to have an experienced team his first season into coaching high school soccer. “It’s 12 seniors with 13 underclassmen. Very solid group. The guys are full of leadership in fact we voted in 4 captains.
At the start of the season, this team knew it had what it took to be special, but the secret is out of the bag. “It’s not a secret anymore. Might have been initially. The beach schools get most of the publicity most of the time. Being a Chesapeake school, we are somewhat under the radar. Not the case anymore,” added Kalder.
Even though the Grizzlies have had their way with teams in the regular season, the players understand for this season to be really special, it needs to continue in post season play. “At this point in the season, if we lose we are done, so we really have to keep up the motivation,” said senior Nate Berning.
And with the new conference realignment these player understand that you need to win to stay in. “The new conference does not guarantee anything. We need to keep winning and keep our reputation in tack,” says senior Frank Luster.
