Chesapeake coach named national coach of the year

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – His program has done nothing but win since he first took over 10 years ago, and now Western Branch High School track and field coach Claude Toukene is being recognized as the best.

Toukene, 39, has been named the New Balance National Track and Field Coach of the Year. He’s only the second coach in the history of Virginia track to receive such an honor.

The Bruins have won 12 track and field titles since 2007 and have never lost a district championship with Toukene at the helm. None of the accolades are important as the values Toukene tries to instill in them everyday.

“The accolades, the state titles, the national rankings, that’s the icing on the cake,” said Toukene, “I have a journey. My journey is to come here and change the kid’s life.”
