Traffic safety aim of Va. pre-holiday messages

Andy Fox reports on tolls and tunnel traffic numbers

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — With the long holiday weekend ahead, state and local officials are aiming to reduce traffic deaths across Virginia.

They’ll begin delivering that message Tuesday with a series of news conference around the state. The first kicks off in Richmond with Gov. Terry McAuliffe. He’ll be joined at the Capitol in Richmond with law enforcement officials, including Col. Steve Flaherty, the superintendent of Virginia State Police.

The other news conferences are in Chesapeake, Wytheville and Bristol.

The campaign comes days before the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, the traditional start of the summer travel and tourism season.

Organizers of the traffic safety campaign say they hope to reduce traffic deaths by 15 percent this year.
