Police charge driver with DWI in crash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A driver involved in a crash in Newport News Monday evening was charged with maiming another while DWI.

Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com the crash happened around 6:20 p.m. at Hampton Roads Center Parkway and Meridian Parkway.

A Nissan Rogue driven by John Patrick Hammond, 34, of Newport News was traveling eastbound on Hampton Roads Center Parkway when it crossed the median and went into westbound traffic. The Nissan missed two vehicles before causing a Ford F350 to run off the road and hit a tree. The driver of the truck was not hurt.

McPherson said Hammond’s vehicle side-swiped a motorcycle and the front tire of the motorcycle flew off, hitting the back of a Dodge Caliber. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with a broken leg and non-life threatening injuries.

Hammond was arrested and charged with maiming another while DWI, reckless driving, failure to report an accident and no insurance. He had minor injuries.
