PD: Driver was texting in pump station crash

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Police say a man who crashed into a City of Suffolk Public Utilities Pump Station Saturday was texting while driving.

Tim Kelley with the City of Suffolk told WAVY.com the crash happened around 8:15 a.m. at the pump station located in the 1600 block of Meadow Country Road.

The driver ran off the roadway, hit a ditch and traveled about 50 feet across a field before hitting the pump station. Kelley said the vehicle came to rest partially inside the pump station, causing significant damage to the building, which was condemned.

Charlie Burns, 36, of Suffolk was charged with operating a vehicle while texting and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
