VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Crews have recovered the tractor-trailer that went off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel last week.

Bob Crofton with Crofton Diving, who was handling the recovery effort, said crews used a crane barge to retrieve the tractor-trailer, which is now on the barge. Crofton told WAVY.com the tractor-trailer is badly mangled.

Crofton Diving crews went out at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and retrieved the tractor-trailer by 11:30 a.m.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was recovered Saturday morning, and handed over to a police boat.

A family friend told WAVY News 10 the driver was 45-year-old Daawuud Hakim of Chesapeake. Hakim died Thursday when the tractor-trailer he was driving hit a maintenance truck on the bridge, and plunged into the bay.
