Two women wounded in Newport News shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – An overnight shooting in the East End of Newport News injured two women.

The victims, aged 26 and 29, told police they were traveling in their car in the area off 22nd Street and Roanoke Avenue just before 3 a.m. when it was struck by gunfire.

A 26-year-old from Newport News was shot in the thigh and a 29-year-old Hampton woman was shot in the shoulder and buttocks, according to a news release from Newport News police.

The victims told the responding officers the suspect was a black male and that he was driving a silver or gray sedan.

Neighbors told WAVY News 10 they heard seven to eight gunshots. They said they could hear the car the women were driving having trouble as it tried to make its way up Roanoke Avenue after being shot.

The driver of the victims’ car side-swiped another vehicle and crashed into another on 23rd Street before coming to a stop. One neighbor said she could see a bullet hole through the car’s side mirror.
