NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A police officer shot a dog that was running loose in Newport News Saturday night.
Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said officers were called to the 1200 block of 23rd Street around 7:30 p.m. to investigate calls about a vicious dog.
The first officer who arrived on the scene found a black and white pit bull with no owner controlling its actions.
Witnesses told police the dog was seen chasing residents before they arrived. When the responding officer got out of his vehicle, the dog charged at the officer, who shot the dog twice and stopped its attack.
Animal Control took control of the injured dog. Police said the dog’s owner was not in the area during the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
