NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Two members of the Virginia Marine Police are being recognized for their undercover work that led to federal charges.

Officials say Capt. John Croft and special agent James Simpson have received the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s annual award for Excellence in Law Enforcement.

Their undercover work led to the arrest and conviction on federal charges of five charter boat captains who illegally took striped bass from federal waters off Virginia Beach.

The award presentations were made this week in Alexandria.

The Virginia Marine Police was originally formed in 1875 and enforce state and federal commercial and recreational fishery laws and regulations.
