Brad Thiessen of the Admirals back in form

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Admirals try to stay alive in the AHL playoffs Friday night when they take on the St. John’s Ice Caps in game 6 of the Eastern Confernece Semifinals. Norfolk trails the series 3 games to 2.

After losing 20-year-old goaltender John Gibson to the Anaheim Ducks following game 2 of the series, the Admirals turned net minding duties back over to veteran Brad Thiessen. But Brad came out rusty in games 3 and 4, surrendering 9 goals as he suffered his first ever AHL playoff loss.

He rebounded though in game 5 with 36 saves in a 3-2 overtime win.

“It was big for me and my confidence,” Thiessen said. “To have guys battling in front of me and blocking a lot of shots and get a big win, that was big for us.”

Despite Thiessen’s struggles in games 3 and 4, coach Trent Yawney remained confident in the 28-year-old netminder.

“He wasn’t playing the last two weeks with Gibson playing all the games,” Yawney said. “It’s hard to come in like that, especially in that position, he looked like the Thiesssen of old and it was nice to see.”

Game 6 gets underway at 6:00 EST.
