NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Admirals live to play another game. Facing elimination against the St. John’s IceCaps in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Admirals won 3-2 in overtime to force a game 6 in St. John’s.
23-year-old Andre Petersson from Sweden netted the game-winner for the Admirals. “It was a nice feeling,” Petersson said after the game. “Now we just have to get up there and beat these guys.”
Petersson nearly had two goals. In the first period, he beat IceCaps netminder Micheal Hutchinson, but the Admirals were penalized for too many men on the ice and the goal was disallowed.
“I scored one in the first, but it didn’t count, we were cheating a bit,” Petersson said.
After serving the penalty, Zack Stortini intercepted the puck and fed Max Friberg who snuck his shot in to tie the game at 1-1.
The Admirals took a 2-1 lead in the third period on Shea Theodore’s first professional goal, but St. John’s came right back on a goal by Eric O’Dell, his second of the game and fourth in the past two days.
Goaltender Brad Thiessen, who surrendered 9 goals in games 3 and 4, was back in form tonight with 36 saves in the win.
Game 6 is Friday night in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
