CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Department of Transportation will be closing the High Rise Bridge at the same time as the Downtown Tunnel this weekend.

VDOT will close the High Rise Bridge on Interstate 64 between midnight and 6 a.m. Saturday, May 16, as well as midnight and 7 a.m. Sunday, May 17. The closure is part of ongoing scheduled maintenance.

Not only will the High Rise Bridge be closed in both directions, but the westbound tube of the Downtown Tunnel will also be closed, leaving motorists just two routes to cross the Elizabeth River. One of those routes, the Midtown Tunnel, is tolled. So, there will be only one free option during the closures – the Gilmerton Bridge.

“It’s bad. I work on the weekends. I don’t work this weekend thankfully, but it definitely affects,” said local driver Wes Kell. “You got to go out of your way now to get over there, you know? I live in Virginia Beach.”

“I think they should at least keep one open,” said Sharon Morgan, also a local driver. “You know, people leave and go out of town and take care of business on the weekend when they have free time. So to close both of them is not a good idea to me.”

VDOT said the High Rise Bridge closure is weather dependent. Stay with WAVY.com for more on this developing story.
