CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – After 12 years, Virginia State Police have closed a case involving shots fired at a Norfolk police officer.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said on Dec. 6, 2001, a Norfolk officer was in his personal vehicle as he traveled to work along Interstate 664 in Chesapeake. Shortly after 11 p.m., shots were fired at his vehicle on the interstate.

It wasn’t until Suffolk Police Detective J. Lyons approached troopers earlier in 2014 with new information that could help solve the case. Anaya said they were able to identify the suspect as Haywood Doron Reid of Suffolk.

Reid was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated malicious wounding and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
