VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in Virginia Beach while he was cycling with his wife Monday.

MPO James Cason with the Virginia Beach Police Department said the crash happened around 10:45 a.m. at 83rd Street and Atlantic Avenue near Shore Drive.

The victim, identified as 65-year-old Pierre Foget of Quebec, was cycling with his wife in the bike path.

According to police, Foget and his wife were in the bike path headed westbound on Shore Drive when he veered into the left lane of traffic and was hit by a vehicle.

Police told WAVY News’ Ava Hurdle speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

Neighbors who live near the Shore Drive deadly crash site, said the accident is heartbreaking. “The city put in almost $2 million to put in that bike path in the hopes of preventing these kinds of things from happening, so that’s what makes it that much more heart wrenching is that we’re trying to make sure this type of thing doesn’t happen anymore,” said Pamela Gibson.

Foget was visiting the area from Canada.
