NN woman killed, another injured in home invasion

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A 32-year-old Newport News woman was killed and another woman was injured during a home invasion early Saturday morning. Police are not releasing the name of the victim.

According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, both women were in a home in the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue around 4 a.m. with four children between the ages of 5 and 8 years old, as well as two men. Someone knocked on the door, and three men forced their way inside.

During the altercation that followed, one of the suspects shot the 32-year-old woman in the head and the other woman in the arm. The suspects fled the area after the shooting.

Police say the victim targeted by the suspects.

Following the shooting, the children, the injured woman, and the two men who were also in the home went to a nearby convenience store and called police.

Neighbors told WAVY News’ Liz Palka the victim was at a friend’s house when the shooting happened. The victim lived two doors down.

“I feel like nothing’s being done,” said Maria Fink, who knew the victim and lives in the apartment complex. “You know, we hear shootings everywhere and nothing is being done.”

Fink said the victim was a loving mother who was constantly looking out for her children.

“Just pray for them, that God will give them comfort,” said Fink. “And for the kids to grow up wise and make right choices.”

Neighbors pointed out surveillance cameras on every building throughout the complex. They said the cameras were installed a year ago and they hope they help police identify the suspects.

Police said all three suspects are black males. One suspect was tall and wore a black hooded sweat shirt. A second suspect wore a red shirt, and the third wore red and white shoes.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the deadly shooting to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
