Mom detained for drugs charged with child neglect

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A 24-year-old woman is facing a child neglect charge after officers found her young child in deplorable conditions inside her vehicle.

Deputy Mike Russell with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com deputies received a report of a reckless driver around 4:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of Hampton Highway. They found the vehicle in the 100 block of Edwards Circle.

Melissa Oelschlager of Newport News was detained for possession of narcotics. Russell said as a deputy was checking the vehicle, her 8-month-old baby was found in the very back of the vehicle, naked on top of soiled clothing in deplorable conditions.

Oelschlager was charged with felony abuse and neglect of a child. It is unknown who took custody of the infant.
