NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Witnesses called troopers after spotting a woman standing on a jersey wall near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Sunday night.
Around 11:10 p.m., Virginia State Police received a call for a white female standing on the jersey wall of a bridge southwest of the HRBT, Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.
When a trooper arrived on scene, witnesses said the woman had just jumped into the water. The trooper could see the woman and hear her screaming, but due to the strong current lost sight of her.
Traffic was stopped and it would be hours before motorists were able to move freely through the HRBT again.
Maritime units from the Coast Guard, Virginia Marine Resource Commission, Hampton Police Department, Norfolk Police Department and Newport News Police Department were dispatched to assist in the search.
Just after midnight, a Coast Guard helicopter spotted the woman and a Coast Guard boat was able to retrieve her from the water.
The woman, said to be 58, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The Coast Guard said she was said to be hypothermic but in good condition.
