Melfa man arrested in early morning shooting

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Deputies have charged 31-year-old James V. Rankin of Melfa in connection with a shooting in Accomack County early Sunday morning.

The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office received a report around 2:30 a.m. of an altercation on Back Street near Melfa between two people, according to Sheriff Todd Godwin. While deputies were en route, they learned someone had been shot.

When deputies arrived, the gunshot victim was located and transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to Sentara Norfolk General, where he was treated and released.

Deputies also located the suspect near the scene and took him into custody. Rankin was charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He being held in the Accomack County Jail without bond.
