SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — State police say a vehicle crashed into a train carrying more than 500 passengers in Sussex County Monday afternoon.

Sergeant Michelle Anaya said at about 2:50 p.m., a 2004 Honda Acura collided with an Amtrak train near the intersection of Ridge Road and Halifax Road.

An investigation indicated the driver of the Honda, 50-year-old Duane Anthony Hodges, drove his vehicle around the crossing guard arms when they were in the down position. Anaya said the train was traveling north at about 70 mph and was carrying about 560 passengers at the time of the collision.

Hodges sustained life-threatening injures and was flown to MCV Hospital in Richmond. Anaya said there are currently no reports of injuries to train passengers.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and Anaya said charges are pending.
