Neighbors: Fight led to more than a dozen gunshots

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A fight near the campus of Old Dominion University on Saturday morning led to more than a dozen shots fired, according to neighbors.

According to an ODU alert sent out to students, the fight happened around 12:45 a.m. Saturday. The alert stated the shooting happened on 42nd Street near Colley Avenue. A group of men were fighting and multiple gunshots were heard, and the suspects fled the area on foot.

Norfolk Police said a gunshot victim showed up at a local hospital a few hours later. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to the campus alert.

Neighbors showed WAVY.com multiple bullet holes throughout 42nd Street. There were bullet holes in at least three cars and three bullet holes in a house on 42nd Street. Neighbors said all those bullets holes are from the fight Saturday morning.

“I rolled off my bed and onto the floor when I was sure that it was gunfire,” said Shjon Stamps, an ODU student.

Stamps estimated he heard more than 15 gunshots. Other neighbors, who didn’t want to be identified, said there was a house party and the group spilled out into the street. They said 25 to 30 men were fighting.

“I don’t like to see stuff like this going on,” said Stamps. “We need to work together so this type of thing doesn’t happen,”

ODU and Norfolk police are investigating the incident.
