NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Norfolk Admirals, the 8-seed in the Eastern Conference, pulled off the improbable upset, defeating the top-seeded Manchester Monarchs in game 4 of the opening round of the playoffs 3-2 on Friday night at Scope.
The Admirals clinch the series 3 games to 1. Maxime Sauve scored the the game-winning goal with 9:11 to play in regulation, it’s the second game in a row Sauve has netted the game winner.
“When the buzzer sounded, I got goosebumps,” Chris Wagner of the Admirals said. “That’s probably the loudest I’ve heard it here all year, It was a lot of fun to play in that game.”
While the main purpose of the Admirals is to develop players for the Anaheim Ducks, young players getting playoff experience is important to the organization.
“You can’t replicate what they went through tonight in terms of closing out a series against a really good team,” coach Trent Yawney said. “You can’t do that in practice, you’ve got to be in the playoffs to have that experience.”
Norfolk now waits to see who it will play in the second round of the playoffs.
