VSP: Driver jumped off bridge to flee crash

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Officials are searching for a man who crashed an SUV on a major interstate and fled the scene, jumping off a bridge.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on Interstate 64 at the High Rise Bridge in Chesapeake. Troopers say a 1996 Chevy Blazer was traveling eastbound when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.

The driver was seen getting out of the driver side window and fleeing the scene of the crash. Anaya said he was also spotted jumping off the end of the bridge, but not into the water, near Bainbridge Boulevard.

Around 10:35 a.m., Anaya said investigators had suspended the search for the suspect.

A passenger was trapped in the vehicle. He was removed from the SUV and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Anaya said.
