NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Two new orangutans have moved into the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk.

Solaris is a 10-year-old orangutan who arrived in Norfolk this week from the Houston Zoo. He’ll join Dara, a 14-year-old female orangutan from the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester.

According to a post on the Virginia Zoo’s Facebook page, the two will be in quarantine for about a month before they go on exhibit.

“Anytime we bring an animal into the zoo they have to go through a 30-day quarantine period. And then, during that quarantine period, we’re going to go ahead and start intros with them, they’ve got to get to know each other, get used to each other, and feel really comfortable before we put them out into the exhibit. There will be an introduction period for when they go out into the yard, and getting used to that. Our long-term goal is to breed them and have babies, so that would be really exciting,” said Jill Tarrant with the Virginia Zoo.

The Virginia Zoo is already home to two orangutans, Schnitz and Pepper.
