NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police need help finding two men who tried to rob a 59-year-old man last week.
Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said the incident occurred last Monday in the 7000 block of River Road. The victim, Elbert Young, was moving out of his apartment, and when he returned home he found some unexpected guests.
“It scared me,” Young said. “I screamed because they came from behind me, and I didn’t hear them come through the door or anything. He touched me in my back and said, ‘Where is the money?'”
Young said the intruders were both wearing masks and surgical gloves. One of the intruders had a thin build and was about 6 feet tall. The other intruder was about 5’5, also with a thin build.
“I stood there ’cause I was shocked,” he said. “I screamed, then we started to fight. Me and the short guy started to fight. It was tough for him, I guess, so the tall guy jumped in and started to fight too.”
Young said the intruders kept demanding money so he told them to look in his laundry room. One of the thieves left to check for the money. Young said wile the thieves were distracted, he managed to get to his bedroom room window, to escape.
“That’s when I penetrated through the glass and fell on top of my head,” Young said. “When I got up, I was full of blood. And I asked my neighbors if they could please call the police ’cause I got robbed.”
A neighbor heard glass breaking and told police he saw a white male wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt running from the building.
Young is still scratched up and bruised from his first-floor fall, but he’s alive. He’s hoping police can catch the culprits so his can regain some sense of security.
