PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A toddler who fell into a pool in North Carolina last week has died, according to a sheriff.

Pasquotank County Sheriff Randy Cartwright said the 21-month-old passed away after being rescued by his father from an above ground pool at a residence on Matthews Drive.

The sheriff said a gate was left open, allowing the boy to wander onto a deck and fall into the pool, which had a cover on it. Rain water had accumulated on top of the cover.

The child was transported to Albemarle Hospital and stabilized, then flown to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.
