Pedestrian hit by train in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A pedestrian has been hit by a train in Norfolk Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened near the intersection of 20th Street and Monticello Avenue, according to Julian Williamson with the Norfolk Fire Department.

Norfolk Southern spokesperson Robin Chapman said a train consisting of several locomotives was traveling west on the line from Lamberts Point toward the Elizabeth River when a man stepped on the tracks in front of the train around 3:10 p.m.

The man was hit at an area that was not a designated crossing, between Monticello Avenue and Church Street, Chapman said.

The pedestrian was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Karen Parker-Chesson with Norfolk Police. Williamson said the man’s injuries were serious.
