NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man is in custody after reportedly assaulting his mother and exiting his home with what appeared to be two weapons, according to police.

Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said officers were called to the 12000 block of St. George Place around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a domestic assault. There, the victim, an elderly woman, was found outside the home. She told police her son had assaulted her and threatened to shoot her.

Around 12:45 a.m., police called a tactical situation and began to assemble, Eley said. The suspect, 51-year-old Michael Charles McCann, left the home holding two weapons around 1:30 a.m.

Eley said McCann complied with police and was taken into custody without incident before the Tactical Team could form. The weapons turned out to be toy replicas of a rifle and a revolver.

McCann has been charged with domestic assault, obstruction of justice and contempt of court, which was an outstanding warrant. All are misdemeanors.
